Why coffee grounds?

Most coffee drinkers know this for sure – a good cup of coffee can make one every groggy morning a little better. But how can the used leftovers from your favorite morning drink benefit your skin?

The best reasons

We’ve gathered some of the best reasons why coffee grounds are a powerful skincare ingredient.

A brewed cup of coffee extracts only a small fraction of the beneficial compounds from the beans—leaving behind most of the oils, fibers, and antioxidants in the coffee grounds.

Coffee grounds are rich in oils, fibers, and plant-based sugars—three elements known for their skin-nourishing benefits.

In our in-house lab, we upcycle high-quality espresso grounds into three key ingredients: coffee oil, coffee fibers, and a water-based extract. These nutrient-rich components are then used in exfoliating and leave-on skincare products, maximizing their skincare potential.

#Antioxidants

Every day, the skin (and the rest of the body) is exposed to free radicals from pollution, UV rays, poor diet, cigarette smoke. Just to name a few. Free radicals are unstable molecules that try to become stable by binding to healthy cells in the body. When free radicals oxidize, they also destroy the healthy cells to which they have bound. Healthy cells that would otherwise have ensured that the skin and the rest of the body could function optimally. Free radicals can, in other words, age the skin and body faster than they would otherwise.

Antioxidants are the best weapon against free radicals, as they prevent them from oxidizing and thereby destroying healthy cells. Coffee grounds are packed with antioxidants, and therefore help to protect the skin from damage caused by free radicals.

#Firmness & elasticity

The grainy texture of coffee grounds makes it ideal for exfoliating the skin. Exfoliation removes dead skin cells from the surface of the skin, allowing new, fresh skin cells to appear. At the same time, coffee grounds contain caffeic acid, which can help increase collagen production in the skin, making the skin firmer and more elastic.

#Anti-inflammatory

The high concentration of antioxidants in coffee grounds gives them powerful anti-inflammatory properties. These antioxidants, including polyphenols and chlorogenic acid, help calm irritated skin, reduce redness, and combat inflammation caused by environmental stressors, acne, or skin conditions like eczema and rosacea. By soothing the skin and minimizing irritation, coffee grounds can contribute to a more balanced, even-toned, and healthy complexion.

#Fatty acids

Oleic acid, an omega-9 fatty acid in coffee oil, helps maintain the skin’s barrier, locking in moisture and protecting against environmental stressors like pollution and harsh weather.

Linoleic acid, an essential omega-6, supports skin regeneration and elasticity. Since the body doesn’t produce it naturally, topical application helps strengthen the skin barrier and improve texture.

Palmitic acid, a saturated fatty acid, softens and smooths the skin while reinforcing its natural defenses.

Together, these fatty acids deeply hydrate, enhance elasticity, and support overall skin health, making coffee oil a powerful moisturizing and anti-aging ingredient.
